Today we take the boat to the Whitsunday Islands, a group of islands off the coast of Airlie Beach.

We gathered early again. The boat was moving fast, 20 knots, to take us to the largest island. Unfortunately, the skipper wouldn't let the people with heart conditions snorkel. They just didn't have enough crew to keep an eye on things. A shame. Arthur is going, of course!

First thing in the morning, we went to Whitsunday Beach, Whitehaven Beach.

On the ferry to the coast we see a sea turtle!

Beach!

The beach is pearly white, the sand very fine. You could even polish it. It's a whopping 8 km long, with copses and shade along the shore. Several boat clubs offer day trips here!

Climbed a small hill, here you look out over the beach and the bay on the other side of the island. A heavenly sight, according to our brochure. Or actually, the other way around.

Anyone seen Gorilla Island above?

The food on the boat is delicious: wraps with salad. Also good for hungry teenagers.

In the afternoon we split up: Arthur goes snorkeling, wetsuit on, takes the boat to a neighboring island, where you can snorkel from the beach.

I was able to make some nice videos with my phone in an underwater case.

We meet again on the boat, which takes 1.5 hours back to Airlie Beach harbour.

Oh, there's also this one walking next to the beach, about a meter and a half long. A goanna, or perhaps an Australian monitor lizard.

And also this beauty:

Beautiful day, a bit of a shame about the snorkeling, but there aren't many nicer places to spend time on the beach.

Back in the harbour we walk past the rowing boats.

  1. Too bad you're not allowed to snorkel. What kind of creature is that on the beach? Arthur took some beautiful pictures underwater. Viewing the videos is a bit delayed. Beautiful holiday photos.
