This morning we first secured our next sleeping spot, at Airlie Beach. Then we took the bus to the hike on the other side of Magnetic Island. The path leads to an old WWII fort perched atop the cliffs. It's 27°C, the sun is hot, but there are trees along the path.

After a half-hour walk, we got a koala tip from a couple who happened to be Dutch as well. After searching for 10 minutes in the forest, we spotted the charming animal. He was clearly in relaxation mode, but maybe it's just his normal behavior (koalas sleep 20 hours a day). It was wonderful to see him. He didn't seem to mind us, 3 meters up in the tree. Koalas eat eucalyptus, which grows abundantly here. Koala fact: he never drinks; he gets all his moisture from the leaves he eats. Isn't he a cutie?

The fort consisted of several concrete buildings on the mountaintop. It was strategically located, with almost 360-degree visibility. It was, of course, intended to spot Japanese troops after the bombing of Australia in 1942. A cannon was stationed here.

At the end of the mountain path, we arrived at Florence Bay. A bay with a beautiful beach, where we naturally took a dip. The water right on the shore was even pleasantly warm.

Then we walked back to the starting point and passed Arthur Bay, the most beautiful bay of all! We've run out of water now; half a liter isn't enough. Next time, we'll bring a liter each. You can walk here for hours and hardly see anyone.

And what kind of plant is this? It has enormous fruits, the size of two watermelons. I think you could make a delicious drink from it (distill it?).

Took the bus (every hour), did some shopping in supermarket 2 in Nelly Bay, made wraps.

Oh, and we can stay tomorrow too, we'll move to another house on the same grounds.

  1. Incredible Arthur's Bay. You just had to capture it. Beautiful view. Is that unusual fruit edible? Beautiful photos, that koala bear is cute.
